Roseapple Syzgium jambos, although valued, eg for honey production, shade and firewood, presents problems. It poses a threat to native Pitcairn plants. This tree is originally from SE Asia and was brought to Pitcairn as a source of firewood. Roseapple has now invaded much of the land. The native Pitcairn plants find it difficult to survive or grow in the deep shade of roseapple and thus have been in severe decline. The Pitcairn Island management plan proposes a solution by progressively taking out the roseapple and replacing with native plants, especially in key sensitive areas. |
